State of Origin betting: game markets, series prices and what a drawn series means

Origin is three games and a shield, and each layer settles differently: a game bet on golden point, a three-way bet without it, and a series bet that has twice been decided by a draw. Here are the markets and the maths.

Key facts

  • A two-way Origin head to head is settled including golden point extra time under the TAB's Victorian rules; a three-way market with a draw price is settled at full time.
  • Two Origin series have been drawn, in 1999 and 2002, and both times Queensland kept the shield as the holder; golden point arrived in Origin in 2003.
  • If one side wins each game 55% of the time, it wins the series 57.48% of the time in our calculation, but 3-0 only 16.64% of the time.
  • A series can be decided before Game Three: NSW sealed the 2026 women's series by winning Game Two 14-10, with Game Three still to play.
  • Game Two of the 2027 men's series is at Eden Park, Auckland, on Wednesday 16 June 2027.

State of Origin betting, explained

State of Origin betting is betting on the three-game series between New South Wales and Queensland, on a single game or on the series as a whole, with a licensed Australian bookmaker. Origin is rugby league, so the game markets work like the club markets in our NRL betting guide. What Origin adds is the series: a three-game contest for a shield, with its own markets and its own history of draws. This guide covers both layers, using the TAB's published Victorian sports betting rules as the worked settlement reference.

Origin markets

MarketWhat you pickSettlement point
Game head to headThe winner of one gameIncludes golden point unless stated
Game result (three-way)NSW, draw or QueenslandTaken at full time; golden point ignored
LineThe winner after a points startHalf points, so no ties
Winning marginTeam and a points bandCheck the extra time rule
Try scorerFirst or anytime try scorerCheck whether extra time tries count
Series winnerThe team that wins the seriesRead the drawn series rule
Series correct score3-0 or 2-1 to either sideAll three games count

Line bets carry half points, so a line betting result cannot tie. The TAB's Victorian rules set points starts to half a point unless you are told otherwise.

Golden point and Origin game bets

A game level at full time goes to golden point extra time. The market you chose decides what that does to your bet.

MarketRule in the TAB's Victorian rulesGame level at full time, won in golden point
Two-way head to head10.8: results include extra time unless notifiedPaid on the team that wins in golden point
Three-way with a draw price10.9: decided without extra time; other bets loseThe draw wins; both team bets lose
Two-way head to head, still level after extra time12.5: payout divided by the teams tiedHalf the normal return

So one golden point field goal can make the same team a winning head to head bet and a losing three-way bet.

Origin odds and the margin

Origin odds are decimal. A game priced NSW $1.70 and Queensland $2.15 implies 58.82% and 46.51%, a total of 105.34%. In our calculation the fair prices are about $1.79 and $2.26, and a balanced book keeps 5.06%.

A three-way price spreads the margin over the draw as well. An example of $1.75, $26.00 and $2.20 adds up to 106.44%, and a balanced book keeps 6.05%.

Series betting: the maths of three games

Series markets ask who wins the shield, or by what score. To see how the chances split, suppose NSW wins any single game 55% of the time and each game is independent. All three games are played even once a series is decided, so every series ends 3-0 or 2-1 if no game is drawn.

Series scoreChance in our calculationFair price
NSW 3-016.64%$6.01
NSW 2-140.84%$2.45
Queensland 2-133.41%$2.99
Queensland 3-09.11%$10.97

A 55% edge per game becomes a 57.48% chance of winning the series, a fair price of $1.74. A clean sweep, even for the stronger side, is the least likely way for it to win.

Series bets are futures bets: placed before Game One, settled after the final game, and exposed to injuries and selection changes in between. A series can also be decided early. In the 2026 women's series, NSW sealed the shield by winning Game Two 14-10 at Suncorp Stadium, with Game Three still to come.

Drawn series and the shield

Origin has been drawn twice. The 1999 decider finished 10-10, the first draw in Origin history, and the 2002 decider finished 18-all. Both series were drawn, and both times Queensland kept the shield as the previous year's winner. Golden point was introduced to Origin in 2003, and NRL.com records NSW as the first team to benefit, with a field goal to win Game One of 2004.

That history is the reason to read a series market carefully. Keeping the shield and winning the series are not the same thing. A series winner bet is settled under your bookmaker's rules for that market, so check what it says about a drawn series before you bet.

Multis and Origin

You can combine an Origin game with other games in a multi, and every leg multiplies the margin. The multi bet calculator shows the combined price and chance as you add legs. A same game multi on one Origin game prices its legs together instead of multiplying them.

Origin betting and Australian law

Origin follows the same betting law as any club game. Bet with a bookmaker licensed in an Australian state or territory, and online only before kick-off: ACMA says in-play betting on sports matches is prohibited with limited exceptions, and the phone exception needs every detail of the bet given wholly by phone. Licensed bookmakers also cannot accept credit cards or crypto.

Pundit tip: for a series bet, write down which result you are backing: a series win, a series score, or the shield. They pay out differently when a series is drawn or decided early.

Frequently asked questions

Does golden point count in State of Origin betting?

In a two-way head to head, yes: under the TAB's Victorian sports rules, final results include extra time unless the bookmaker says otherwise. In a three-way market that offered a draw, the result is taken at full time, so a game decided in golden point is a winning bet for the draw.

What happens to a series bet if the Origin series is drawn?

It depends on the market. The shield stays with the holder after a drawn series, as it did for Queensland in 1999 and 2002, but a series winner bet is settled under your bookmaker's rules for that market. Read whether you are betting on winning the series or holding the shield.

How do Origin odds work?

Origin odds are decimal prices that include your stake. $2.15 returns $21.50 from $10 and implies 46.51%. Add both sides of a game market to see the margin; $1.70 and $2.15 add up to 105.34%.

When is State of Origin 2027?

The NRL has confirmed Game Two of the 2027 series for Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday 16 June 2027. In 2026 the men's games were on 27 May (Accor Stadium), 17 June (MCG) and 8 July (Suncorp Stadium).

Can I bet on Origin during the game?

Not online. Online in-play betting on sport is prohibited in Australia, so bets through an app or website must be placed before kick-off. The only exception is a bet placed wholly by phone.
