Sweet Bonanza: RTP, multipliers and the maths behind the candy pokie

Sweet Bonanza is Pragmatic Play's pay-anywhere candy pokie. Here are its official numbers, how its tumbles and multipliers really combine, what 96.48% means for your money, and where it stands under Australian law.

Key facts

  • Sweet Bonanza is a Pragmatic Play online pokie launched on 25 June 2019: a 6x5 grid where 8 or more matching symbols anywhere win, with tumbling reels.
  • Pragmatic Play lists its RTP at 96.48% and called it a high-volatility game. Its launch release put the top win at 21,175x the bet.
  • Four to six scatters trigger 10 free spins, where multipliers from 2x to 100x land and are added together, not multiplied, at the end of a tumble sequence.
  • In our calculation, $500 of play at 96.48% costs $17.60 on average, but a high-volatility game can lose far more than that in a session.
  • Online pokies cannot legally be offered to people in Australia under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. Playing is not an offence, but you have no Australian protection.

Sweet Bonanza at a glance

Sweet Bonanza is an online pokie from Pragmatic Play, launched on 25 June 2019, in which fruit and candy symbols pay when 8 or more of the same kind land anywhere on a 6x5 grid. Winning symbols vanish, new ones tumble in, and the free spins add multipliers worth up to 100x. Pragmatic Play lists the RTP at 96.48% and described the game at launch as high volatility. Its studio, covered in our Pragmatic Play pokies guide, supplies regulated markets overseas; in Australia it is not legally available online, for reasons set out at the end of this page.

How pay-anywhere and tumbles work

There are no paylines. A 6x5 grid has 30 positions, and a win needs at least 8 matching symbols somewhere among them, so a winning symbol has to fill more than a quarter of the screen, 26.7% in our calculation. That is a high bar, which is why individual wins tend to come from tumbles rather than single drops.

A tumble works like this: the winning symbols are removed, the symbols above fall down, and new ones drop in from the top. If the new layout makes another 8 or more, it pays again, and the chain continues until nothing new wins. One paid spin can therefore produce several wins. Our cluster pays pokies guide compares this pay-anywhere style with true cluster games.

How the multipliers really add up

This is where Sweet Bonanza is often misread. Pragmatic Play says that during free spins, "at the end of the tumbling sequence, the values of all multiplier symbols add together". Added, not multiplied.

A worked example. A free spin's tumble sequence wins a total of 6x your bet before multipliers, and three multiplier symbols landed during it:

Multipliers that landedCombined multiplierPaid win
2x, 5x, 10x2 + 5 + 10 = 17x6x bet x 17 = 102x bet
If they multiplied instead2 x 5 x 10 = 100x600x bet

The real rule pays 102x here, not 600x. A huge result needs either a big single multiplier or a big base win to apply it to, and ideally both. That also explains the volatility: most free spin rounds collect small multipliers on small wins, and the rare round that pairs a 100x with a big tumble chain carries much of the game's return.

Pundit tip: a multiplier only counts if the tumble sequence it lands in actually wins. A 100x on a spin that pays nothing is worth nothing.

What 96.48% means for your money

RTP is the share of all money bet that a game pays back over a very long run. Expected loss is turnover multiplied by the rest. In our calculation:

TurnoverAverage cost at 96.48%At a pub machine's legal floor of 85% (NSW)
$100$3.52$15.00
$500$17.60$75.00
$1,000$35.20$150.00

Those averages hide the spread. A high-volatility game spends long stretches paying back much less than 96.48%, then occasionally much more. With a $100 budget at $1 a spin, losing all of it before a feature lands is entirely possible, and it is not a sign the game is broken. The pokies calculator lets you test your own bet and spin numbers, and our pokies volatility guide explains the spread.

The top win is a ceiling, not an expectation. In our calculation, 21,175x is $21,175 on a $1 spin and $4,235 on a 20c spin, and almost no player will ever see it.

The Sweet Bonanza versions

Pragmatic Play has built several sequels on the same grid:

GameRTPWhat changesTop win
Sweet Bonanza96.48%The original: multipliers up to 100x21,175x (launch release)
Sweet Bonanza 100096.53%Candy bomb multipliers up to 1,000x; 3+ lollipops in the bonus add 5 spins25,000x
Sweet Bonanza Super Scatter96.51%Super Scatters pay 100x, 500x, 5,000x or 50,000x when they trigger the bonus; multipliers stay on the grid until the feature ends50,000x

The differences in RTP are a few hundredths of a percent, far too small to matter in a session. The differences in top win are large, and they usually come with more volatility. Our highest RTP pokies page compares published returns across makers.

Can you play Sweet Bonanza in Australia?

Not legally online. Under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, online pokies cannot be offered to people in Australia, whoever made them, and ACMA, the federal regulator, asks internet providers to block illegal offshore sites. The law targets the operator: it is not an offence for you to play. But an offshore casino is outside every Australian regulator, so nobody here can check that its Sweet Bonanza runs at 96.48% or make it pay you. ACMA warns that players of illegal sites risk losing their money. Our guide to whether online pokies are legal in Australia covers the detail.

Pragmatic Play's own game page offers a demo behind an 18+ age check, which is a free way to see the tumbles and multipliers in action without betting. If you do gamble, set a limit first, and see our gambling help page for free 24/7 support.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Sweet Bonanza?

Pragmatic Play's game page lists Sweet Bonanza's RTP as 96.48%. Sweet Bonanza 1000 is listed at 96.53% and Sweet Bonanza Super Scatter at 96.51%. RTP is a long-run average over millions of spins, not what you get back in one session.

What is the max win on Sweet Bonanza?

Pragmatic Play's launch announcement in June 2019 said the free spins offer potential wins of up to 21,175x the original bet. Sweet Bonanza 1000 goes up to 25,000x, and Sweet Bonanza Super Scatter has a maximum win of 50,000x.

How do Sweet Bonanza multipliers work?

During free spins, multiplier symbols worth 2x to 100x can land. Pragmatic Play says that at the end of the tumbling sequence the values of all multiplier symbols are added together and applied to the win. So 2x, 5x and 10x make 17x, not 100x.

Is Sweet Bonanza high volatility?

Yes. When it launched, Pragmatic Play's chief commercial officer described Sweet Bonanza as a high-volatility game. That means long dry spells are normal and most of the return comes from occasional big features.

Can I play Sweet Bonanza pokies in Australia?

No online casino can legally offer it to people in Australia, because online pokies are prohibited services under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 and ACMA blocks illegal sites. It is not an offence for you to play, but you have no Australian protection if a site refuses to pay. Pragmatic Play's own site has an 18+ demo.
