Gates of Olympus, briefly

Gates of Olympus is a pay-anywhere online pokie from Pragmatic Play, announced on 24 February 2021, in which Zeus throws random multipliers worth 2x to 500x onto six tumbling reels. You win with 8 or more matching symbols anywhere on the screen, four scatters start 15 free spins, and in those spins the multipliers stack into a running total. Pragmatic Play lists the RTP at 96.50% and called the game "a highly volatile experience". The studio itself is covered in our Pragmatic Play pokies guide.

Multipliers in the base game

In the base game a multiplier symbol only matters on a spin that wins. Zeus can drop one or more during a spin or its tumbles. Pragmatic Play's pages for the 1000 and Super Scatter editions spell out how several combine: if more than one lands, "their values are added together and applied to the total win". The original's page does not say it in those words, so we assume it works the same way.

So a base spin whose tumbles win 4x your bet, with a 5x and a 10x multiplier landing, pays 4 x (5 + 10) = 60x. The same multipliers on a spin with no win pay nothing at all, which happens often given the 8-symbol threshold. On a 30-position grid, 8 matching symbols is more than a quarter of the screen.

The free spins running total, worked through

The free spins work differently, and this is where the big results come from. Pragmatic Play says that "whenever a multiplier symbol lands on a winning spin, it's added to a total running multiplier and applied to that win". The total does not reset between spins.

Here is an illustration, in our calculation, of one round:

Free spinWin before multipliersMultiplier landing on the winRunning totalPaid
12x10x10x20x
2none25x (no win, so it does not count)10x0
33x25x35x105x
41.5x2x37x55.5x

Look at spin 4. A modest 1.5x win with only a 2x multiplier paid 55.5x, because it inherited the 35x built up earlier. That is the engine of the game's volatility: rounds that collect a few early multipliers on winning spins can snowball, while rounds where the multipliers land on losing spins end small. The order matters as much as the values.

Our Sweet Bonanza guide shows the other Pragmatic Play approach, where multipliers are added up within a tumble sequence instead of carried forward across the round.

Pundit tip: a big running total late in the round is exciting, but it is not a reason to raise your bet afterwards. The next round starts from zero.

What 96.50% RTP means in dollars

On average, over a very long run, Gates of Olympus keeps 3.50% of everything bet. In our calculation:

Total betAverage cost at 96.50%
$100$3.50
$1,000$35.00
$10,000$350.00

"Total bet" is turnover, not your deposit. Two hundred spins at $2 is $400 of turnover, so the average cost is $14, and a highly volatile game can easily cost the full $400 in a session that never builds a running total. Try your own bet sizes in the pokies calculator.

Gates of Olympus 1000 and Super Scatter

GameMultipliersExtra ruleRTP listed
Gates of Olympus2x to 500xRunning total in free spins96.50%
Gates of Olympus 10002x to 1,000x3+ scatters in the bonus add 5 free games; bonus buy for 100x the bet96.50%
Gates of Olympus Super ScatterUp to 500x1, 2, 3 or 4 Super Scatters on the trigger pay 100x, 500x, 5,000x or 50,000xNot shown on the page

The 1000 edition's bonus buy turns 100 spins of stake into one feature: $100 at a $1 bet, $200 at $2. Pragmatic Play's page does not say whether the buy runs at a different RTP. Either way, buying features means each dollar of turnover gets spent faster; our bonus buy pokies guide explains the cost, and highest RTP pokies puts 96.50% in context across makers.

Gates of Olympus and Australian law

There is no legal way to play Gates of Olympus for real money online from Australia. The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 bans providing online pokies to people in Australia, and ACMA works with internet providers to block the offshore casinos that do it anyway. The offence is the operator's, not yours, but an offshore site answers to no Australian regulator: you cannot verify that its copy of the game runs at 96.50%, and there is no local avenue if it keeps your balance.
